Children’s Book Week will be held this year between August 18-24 with the theme “Find Your Treasure”. Each year across the country, the Children’s Book Council of Australia brings children and books together celebrating CBCA Book Week. During this time schools, libraries, booksellers, authors, illustrators, and children join in celebrating Australian children's literature. The Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year will be announced on Friday, August 17 and we wish each author and illustrator short-listed the very best of luck.
Children’s Book Week is a great opportunity for children to learn about literacy and disadvantage in remote Indigenous communities. One of the ways they can do this is by hosting their own Great Book Swap!
Why not set up a Great Book Swap stall at your school and call it “Find Your Treasure”? For a gold coin donation, children could choose a book blindfolded like a pirate or take one from a lucky dip! Of course, there’s always the option of children choosing their own ‘treasured’ book.
Literacy is the greatest gift you can give a child – why not help them see books as the treasure trove they are? And, importantly, that books and reading are joys that should be freely available to all Australians.
