How Does Your Garden Grow? is a collection of short stories reflecting the passion for gardening shared by children on opposite sides of the country: the students of the Tjuntjuntjara Remote Community School (WA) and Lachie Coman, a school boy from Firbank Grammar.
In 2010, Lachie travelled out to Tjuntjuntjara Remote Community School, which is close to the border of South Australia, north of the Nullarbor Plain and 680 Kilometres north-east of Kalgoorlie. Lachie took out books supplied by our Foundation and worked with the school students on their local vegie patch. During Lachie's visit, he and the kids of the Spinifex Country wrote, drew and shared stories of their gardens which are brought vividly to life in How Does Your Garden Grow?
At the launch of the book, special guest Andy Griffiths regaled the students of Firbank Grammar School with stories from the book. Lachie also spoke of his travels out through the Great Victorian Desert and experiences in Tjuntjuntjara community.
"I hope that this journey has shown that books and reading can open the most wonderful and sometimes unexpected doors, " he concluded.
Lachie's story was featured in an interview in The Age newspaper, Monday 11 March and he was interviewed on Radio National Breakfast program.
The Foundation would like to thank: Pat Kenny, Head of Junior and Firbank Grammar School for a wonderful event and Pat Kenny, Head of Junior, for organising the event; Andy Griffiths, Wilbur Klein from Tjuntjuntjara Remote Community School.
A special thanks of course to Lachie – for inspiring us with his passion for literacy and keen sense of social justice.
