Wednesday 4 September 2019 - a national celebration!

Indigenous Literacy Day is a national celebration of Indigenous culture, stories, language and literacy. Through activities on the day, we focus our attention on the disadvantages experienced in remote communities and encourage the rest of Australia to raise funds and advocate for more equal access to literacy resources for remote communities. Whether you are a school, bookseller, publisher, library, business, organisation or individual, here are some ways you can participate on this day:

  • Hold a Great Book Swap
  • Donate a percentage of your product sales on this day – very popular for bookshops!
  • Make a donation through our website
  • Hold a literacy event such as a book launch or storytelling session
  • Take an ILF donation box to work or school
  • Buy an ILF t-shirt for your staff or students to wear to work or school
  • Hold your own fundraising event
  • Advocate for us on social media and tag @IndigenousLiteracyFoundation on Facebook and @IndigenousLF on Twitter and Instagram

For the month of September 2019, sign up to our Indigenous Literacy Day fundraising campaign 'Fill A Bookshelf' and fill your virtual shelf with books for children in remote communities!

We are excited to bring you something a little different, something we think you’ll enjoy sharing with your friends and family, and something that gives you the opportunity of ensuring kids in remote communities have access to quality, new books.

Launching on Indigenous Literacy Day (Wednesday 4 September 2019) our Fill a Bookshelf fundraising campaign aims to raise $300,000 to help us gift 30,000 new books to schools and service organisations in remote communities where books are scarce.

How does it work? The idea is simple...
1. Sign up online to create a fundraising page and receive an empty virtual bookshelf.
2. Ask friends and family to donate a virtual book to your page (in the form of a donation).
3. Fill your virtual bookshelf!
4. Change the lives of Indigenous children.

Your donations will help us buy new, carefully selected books for children who have none. To put it simply, without your support, in a very real sense bookshelves in remote Indigenous communities are empty.

We believe all children in Australia deserve the same opportunities – in education, employment, health and well being. All evidence tells us that literacy is the pathway to CHOICE for these opportunities, and BOOKS are the building blocks for literacy. If you believe this too, sign up today!

Thank you for your support and for celebrating Indigenous literacy with us each September!
