The Honey Ant Readers is a new research-based literacy program developed at the request of and in collaboration with Indigenous communities in Central Australia. The program is includes a progressive series of 20 books with themes, stories and illustrations consistent with Indigenous knowledge and culture and complemented by learning materials such as letter, word and picture cards, activity books, board games, song and rhyme books, teacher resources that are easy to use, relevant to the Australian curriculum and fun for all ages. The readers progress from Aboriginal English, the common language spoken in playgrounds and communities across the country, to Standard Australian English, along natural stages of language acquisition consistent with the known cognitive and social-psychological benefits of learning to read in first language and thus ensuring enhanced reading success.
