The group of knowledgeable and enthusiastic book lovers was spoilt for choice! Over 1000 books from more than 50 publishers made the selection very challenging. The high quality of the texts created much discussion and debate over which books best fit our criteria.
The selection process needed to be rigorous, as the list of books will be supplied to diverse Indigenous communities across Australia, from the red desert of the central, to the wet in the East and the escarpments of the north. Our unique list consists of books with Indigenous themes, that are culturally sensitive and includes books written by Indigenous authors. The chosen books support diverse interests, cover a range of genres and consist of a variety of literacy levels. Ultimately, the books will engage readers of all ages and support Indigenous Australians with getting access to quality books.
The list will be made available to remote schools, community centres, childcare centres, playgroups, women centres and health clinics over the next few weeks. We aim to deliver the books into remote communities by mid April.
