Indigenous Literacy Day 2010 at Marrickville High was a wonderful celebration of
the spirit of The Indigenous Literacy Project with over 400 kids from seven schools.
The event included song, dance and the launch of 'Our Westside Story', a beautifully
crafted 40ft long book written by the entire school of Marrickville West Primary
School. The book will be given to a remote school in Western Australia.

Siena College, VIC
Today, during lunchtime and after school, Siena College participated in the Great
Book Swap. The Social Justice Captain Alana Arfi and the Social Welfare Captain
Madeleine Humphris took responsibility in leading the SRC Team in promoting, organising
and running the Great Book Swap sessions. These Captains did a wonderful job and
were happy with our first experience in using this fundraising activity to raise
awareness of Indigenous literacy issues.

Weetangera Primary School, ACT
Weetangera Primary School has just had another successful ‘Book Bazaar’ to raise
funds for The Indigenous Literacy Project. Our lunchtime ‘Book Bazaar’ was held
today, Indigenous Literacy Day, 1 September 2010. Students were invited to donate
unwanted books, ranging from early readers to chapter books, and then purchase a
new book for $1.00. Our Student Representative Council (SRC) did a fantastic job
assisting with book sales and money collection'.

Our swap was a great success and we have raised nearly $500.00. The kids really
got on board and are already talking about when we do it next year. One of the Prep
children told me it is the best book swap they've had in their whole life! (A whole
5 years).

Fitzgerald State School, QLD
At Fitzgerald State School students had a fun day trying to guess who the teachers
were behind the mask! The teachers were asked to hold a book in each hand depicting
what they like to read in Fiction and Non-fiction. Students guessed many from clothing
or jewelry but also because '... oh that must be Mr A he is always talking about
fishing!' The entry fee of $1 in the competition went to the Indigenous Literacy
Project.

Kenthurst Preschool, NSW
During The Great Book Swap week some of the classes have enjoyed learning about
Indigenous culture through dot painting, singing songs about the Aboriginal Flag
and stories from Indigenous related books. The children decorated signs and boxes
for the Book Swap using dot painting. The children enjoyed deciding which book to
choose when they put their tokens in the box.
