How to Help

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) invites everyone to help raise awareness of the literacy crisis affecting many remote Indigenous Australians, and to raise much needed funds to support the literacy work of our Foundation.

Attend an event on Indigenous Literacy Day

The fifth annual Indigenous Literacy Day is Wednesday 5 September 2012 with events held across Australia.  Keep an eye on the events page for details.

Buy a book at a participating bookshop on Indigenous Literacy Day

Participating bookshops around Australia donate a percentage of their takings on Indigenous Literacy Day to ILF. Click here to find the ILF bookshops near you.

Hold or attend a Great Book Swap Challenge

The Great Book Swap Challenge is a fundraising idea for schools, businesses, groups, organisations and bookclubs.

The Great Book Swap Challenge is a simple and easy way to share our common love of books while raising money to support Indigenous literacy. On ILD hold a swap and donate one of your favourite books and pay a small fee to swap it for someone else's book. All money raised is donated to ILF.

You can register online if you'd like to host a swap at your school, business or club.

Donate a book pack

You can donate a set of 12 early childhood books, selected by our Indigenous Literacy Program Manager in consultation with a team of experts, that provides babies, toddlers and preschool children in remote Indigenous communities access to a valuable reading resource. You can read more about the books and how to donate them here.

Make a direct donation

Donations are very much appreciated from individuals, businesses, organisations and schools. The Donations page has full details.

Are you a teacher, teacher-librarian or school principal?

Over 250 schools supported ILF in 2011. Many held their own Great Book Swap Challenge, hosted author visits on Indigenous Literacy Day , during Children’s Book Week or during National Literacy & Numeracy Week. Indigenous Literacy Day is an excellent event to discuss Indigenous literacy with your students and to help fundraise. Click here for further information and register for your teacher’s pack today.
